Our Gift Shop is open on Saturdays during the summer months, 10 AM to 4 PM!
May 27th : 10am – 5pm, and May 28th : 12pm-5pm – Lady’s Slipper Festival: Our opening weekend and annual Lady’s Slipper Festival! Saturday and Sunday the center will be busy with food, live music, and arts and crafts vendors, not to mention our incredible trails peppered with the rare and beautiful Lady’s Slipper orchid!
June 24th : 10:30am – Indian Artifacts: Kevin Roggenbuck brings the history of the native peoples of Huron County to life in this wonderful program. He brings with him artifacts and fascinating stories!
July 1st : 10:30am – Birds Of Prey: Joe Rogers of Wildlife Recovery will be traveling to the Thumb for this interesting and informative presentation! Join him, his team, and a flock of rescued birds of prey to learn about these birds and their natural habitat. Come early and grab a seat – this program fills up fast!
July 8th : 10:30am– Biodiversity and You: The Organization for Bat Conservation will have live animals on hand - a bat, flying squirrel, owl, and snake - to teach us about our environment, its current state, and how you can help improve it for humans and wildlife!
July 22nd : 10:30am – Michigan Reptiles and Amphibians: Jim and Carol McGrath are back this year with members of Nature Discovery’s vast collection of rescued animals. Join us as we learn about Michigan’s incredible reptiles and amphibians!
July 29th : 10:30am – Michigan’s Passenger Pigeon: Gone Forever: New!Al and Dave Eicher, Nature Center favorites, will be at the Nature Center to talk about the history of the passenger pigeon in our great state!
August 5th : 10:30am – Pet Adoption Day/Vaccine Clinic: A first this year! Adoptable dogs from The Thumb Animal Shelter will be at the Nature Center – come on out and meet your new best fur-ever friend! We will also have a pet vaccination clinic for new or existing furry family members!
August 12th : 10:30 am – Michigan Snakes: Nature Discovery will be making a return visit this year, and this time they will have snakes!. Michigan has a diverse snake population with fascinating behaviors and habitats – this is a not-to-be-missed program that appeals to all ages. Claim your seat early – this is another favorite!
August 19th : 10:30am – Nature’s Dangers: Another new program for 2017! Phil Stephens will be showing us things to watch for while enjoying the great outdoors to keep us safe! After a short classroom portion, you’ll hit the trails to find nature’s dangers such as poison ivy and stinging nettles! Don’t forget to dress for the weather as we learn about frostbite – let’s hope that’s not a problem in August!
August 26th : 10:30am – Mushrooms: Resident fungus expert Dr. Ralph Czerepinski is back again this year to show us the world of fungi! This program will also take you out on the trails to collect and identify mushrooms - a fun and informative program for all ages.
September 2nd : 10:30am – Bats of the World: The Organization for Bat Conservation is joining us with their incredibly popular program, Bats of the World! You will meet the massive flying fox, along with the tiny local favorite, the little brown bat. Another popular program - come early to get a good seat!
September 16th : 6pm – Fall Dinner: Robert McGreevy is back by popular demand this year! Come and join us for a fantastic meal followed by Mr. McGreevy’s program “Lost Legends of the Lakes.” In this discussion, Mr. McGreevy will give us a tour of the different shipwrecks around Lake Huron, and their stories. Purchase tickets early as they sell out fast! Call 989-551-8400 to secure your seat!
October 11th: 4pm – 7pm – Fundraiser Dinner: Bring the family for an affordable and delicious buffet dinner at The Pasta House Restaurant in Kinde and lend your support to the Nature Center!
October 14th : 10:30am: Fall Foliage and Family Fun: New for 2017!!! Our first fall color tour! Why drive north for those fall leaves when the most stunning colors can be found right here in the Thumb! Join us for cider, donuts, and pumpkins too! Wander the trails and take in all that Michigan in autumn has to offer.
